I Arrived at WNTS on Wed 16th Dec 1936, Aged 10 years and five months to the day, DOB 16-7-26. My school number was 117, my company was number 6, my company officer (an ex yeoman of signals ) was Mr. Spain, Known as 'Fizzy'., amicable easy to get along with pleasant bloke known to flash his thingy when out on rambles, (TRUE). Fizzy was called up in1940 and an elder ex CPO named Mr. Stark became our Co officer. I really liked old 'Killer' Stark' a great bloke, But he smoked Capstan Navy Cut Full Strength Ciggies Continuously, He also promoted me to PO Boy at an unusual early age. Our Capt sup; was amicably known as 'Flogger Campbell' Called up during WW2 as a Lt/Com. Flogger Campbell returned to WNTS about 1941. He was a sick person biologically. Campbell relieved the Temp Superintendent Admiral Sir Edward Eaton - Ellis, who unfortunately died during his tenure, and was interred at Bintry Churchyard his home village. 'Pop Admiral' as he was known was well like by us children, fortunately I did not suffer much of Campbell's wrath on his return as I Joined the RN on Wed 7th January 1942. My brother Christopher was also at the school from Nov 1935 to December 1940, his number was 253. Chris died 2005. My memoirs are written in the form of a novel that describes the school among other areas of my life in pseudo form. Writing as John Leonard Spencer, my real name Leslie John Bowyer.
